Attention blog readers: you asked, and I have answered.
This will be a LOOOOONG post. Rather than break it up into parts…i'm just going to let it roll. Sound good. If you didn't actually ask a question, I didn't copy it in here, but i do appreciate all comments.
This was fun, man. Now I must get back to my parents. We need to start baking the special George Bush muffins that we all so love…

Those mustaches are adorable, and where on earth can I get them!
Posted by: Amy Hummel
Well, Amy…lucky you. You will find them here: stylin!
I am wondering, did you knit that red dishcloth in your sink? It is lovely. What kind of yarn did you use?
Posted by: Anna Beth
In fact, I did! I used Mission 1812 cotton yarn.
Oh Yippee!!! I've been wanting to know if you will be doing any CKU or LSS classes this year—specifically in Florida.
Posted by: Heather
Hey Heather…sorry to say, I won’t be teaching at CKU this year. Had to take a year off to focus on my job at Simple!
Question: Have you given up on knitting? In February, you inspired me to re-learn crochet and I proceeded to get "warm fuzzies" visiting the local yarn shop with all those colors, textures, and potential projects. For me, it was a sense of therapy where I could sort of meditate for a few minutes. What do you do now to get to that "Zen" place for a few minutes?
Posted by: Lisa
Lisa, I was totally gung ho…knitting like a crazy person, but now…for whatever reason, I’m not knitting. Never say never. I have a ton o’ yarn for another purse project, but honestly? How many felted bags do I need? Maybe I should tackle socks! For zenness… i try to nap any chance I get.
Cathy, you crack. Me. UP! Love your blog. Very down-to-earth and entertaining.
My question is a two-parter, so brace yourself.
1. Would it be considered strange for the mother of two daughters to acquire a package of self-adhesive mustaches for said daughters with which to amuse themselves (and their mother)?
2. Where might the aforementioned mother of two daughters find such a package of self-adhesive mustaches?
Tina
Posted by: Tina
Tina…1. No, are you crazy? Girls SHOULD wear ‘staches… and 2. See the very first question for a link to Amazon!
My question is when are you coming *hooome* to the Seattle area to have a class, hmmm? 😀
Posted by: Ingunn
Sigh. Home. Man, I miss that city. The answer: not any time soon. So sorry. No teaching plans on the horizon for anywhere in the U.S. or abroad.
What was your favorite toys as a child?
Posted by: Kelli Johnson
Hey Kelli…well, I had a few of them: my Baby Alive, my entire Barbie collection, and, probably my most favorite, my pet rock collection. I was WAY into pet rocks. Even ran my own orphanage. One of the rocks that lived at the orphanage had that same auto-immune disease that plagued John Travolta in “Boy in the Plastic Bubble” and he had to live inside a plastic room that i constructed using Saran wrap taped over a small shelf in my bed’s headboard. I always felt bad that the little rock couldn’t go out and play in the Pet Rock Amusement Park I’d built in my backyard.
I’m not exaggerating this, either.
Hi Cathy,
My question is did you ever redecorate your room or buy a new car? if yes to either can we see the results?

Hey BF…the answer is: NAY. But no worries, it’ll all go on the blog if it ever comes to pass. Go 1990 Honda Civic!
Hi im from England. Have you ever thought about doing something over here. Because i think that would be really cool????????
Posted by: wendy
Well Wendy, Tally HO! to you. I too, think it would be really cool. Alas, for this year, I’m not traveling and teaching. But, never say never for future years! Save me some crumpets!
Always a delightful read!!
My question:
Did you ever in a million years think that you would be scrapping for a living?? Do you love your job?
Posted by: Vicki Boutin
Hey Vicki! How are ya? Nice to see you in the office the other week. Well…you know, i never thought i’d be a scrapbooker. Period. That is still a shocker to me. However, my actual job requires very little scrapbooking of me. The whole writing the books thing was extracurricular, if that makes sense, and not part of my job at CK Media, which is predominantly graphic design, art direction and production for the mag and other related projects, such as books and special issues.
Do I love it? I completely do. It’s an absolute bonus to work as a designer with subject matter you love.
Is your orange sweatshirt still your favorite? I remember reading about it in one of your layouts, and in your previous blog and you made me think of my all time favorite (mine is gray with a blue). Every time I wear mine now I can't help to think of your orange sweatshirt and wonder if you still love it as much as you did when you talked about it! I know, I know, silly question. 🙂
Posted by: Maria
Maria? the truth? I’m wearing it as i type…and did you know i actually have TWO of them?
You're just too funny! You inspired me with your little purse in Feb. and I made a bunch of them. And since you mention LOST, do you by any chance share my obsession with Sawyer? 'Cause if you do, I think you should back off. I mean, in a contest, he'd definitely go for you first 'cause there's no way I can match your wit, but be fair. I caught him fondling fabric first!
Posted by: Thimbleanna
Sawyer is insanely hot. Dirty. Sweaty. Has a southern accent. What’s not to love? And you know what? He wouldn’t like me. I’m too high maintenance. It’s okay. You go for it!
ok here is my question 😀 😀
I love to scrapbook for myself/my family as well as others — I have been throwing around the idea of possibly trying to get published or share my work/art in some shape or form — What would you recommend that someone in my shoes do??? what would be the next step?? How would one work up the courage to share something that can is so personal — on one hand I love doing it and WANT TO SHARE IT — and on the other I am SCARED TO DEATH 😀 😉 any advise and/or wisdom you would be will to share would be greatly appreciated
Posted by: Shawnna
Shawnna…good question…. You know, scrapbooking IS very personal and what we create makes us feel good. The idea of submitting something and not having it published might seem like a slap in the face, but you know what? Nothing can take away from the fact that you created it and it’s your memories and that’s just cool, regardless of if it ever gets into a mag. I will tell you this, and I mean it: it’s really cool the first few times you get published, then…you realize, that it’s just scrapbooking, and not the end-all be-all. What I mean is the actual published part. This hobby is really cool. Getting a page published is icing on the cake. I really believe that. Don’t be scared. Be proud that you create with your own two hands. And i realize it’s easy for me to say this, having had as many pages out there as i do, but if you took it all away today, i’d still scrap for fun and for me. If you’d like to start sharing your pages, try online communities like Two Peas. That’s how I started sharing, and i made some amazing friends along the way.
I've always liked your photos. Do you have any tips in that area that you can share with very amateur photographers? Mostly to do with how you capture such good shots and what not.
Posted by: Rebecca
Hey Rebecca….i’m flattered, thanks. I don’t think of myself as the greatest of photogs. Probably because i have friends who work as photogs and blow me away with what they do. My main tip is just to shoot a TON of any given situation. Usually, something will stand out. I’m not so much into the portrait stuff these days, but…i do try to take tons of shots from different angles and distances at any given time. It usually gives you lots of choices, and something always seems to turn out pretty good!
here's a (slightly bitter) question: why do you minnesotans get mr. yorn to open for the crowded house show, while we wisconsinites don't??
*sniff* got my email today about the show from the venue…was all excited until i saw no pete. i'm not such a c.h. fan, but pete does no wrong in my eyes. and seeing him twice in a year would be delish (and i know it'll be your 3rd time! soooo jealous!)
here's a real question: have you ever considered popping down the interstate to the madison area to do a workshop/class/whatever? i'd totally be there.
Posted by: laura kate
1. Because we are superior. (Did i say that?) Just kidding! I have NO idea but i’m thanking my lucky, lucky STARS! and, 2. I adore Madison. My hubby used to be part of Espresso Royale Caffe, until he broke out and bought his stores from the company, so i loved that i’ve spent time there. Again, i’m not teaching this year because of work. Sorry, Laura!
Will you be getting a dog after Chip leaves? I know you had some, uh, issues, with dogs before. Those experiences won't scare you away from trying dog ownership again, will they?
Posted by: Nancy
That feels like a million dollar question. I don’t know. I love…and i mean LOVE…the essence of owning a dog. Chip, however, is so old and mellow, what’s not to love. Let’s just say I will review my options, and those options likely will not involve puppies, but maybe older, rescue dogs. However, I have already decided that if i do get a dog, I’m not going to post about it right away. Ahem…
Ok, so when you said you were dogsitting, I thought for maybe a week or two. But it's been, like, months! Chips family must've gone on a great vacation? Or something work related? You don't have to tell me where they went but I've just never heard of someone dogsitting for so long (unless you are really just keeping her and trying to tell us that the family is coming back soon!).
Have fun with your parents!
Posted by: Shannon
How observant of you Shannon. Yes. Chip is here for 6 months while her professor/owner and family are out of the country on a special sabbatical/guest teaching gig. That is why we have her for this length of time. We are planning to dye her black when they return and act like we do not know them.
My husband and I were talking about this in regards to us/our siblings on Sunday, so dont think it's completely random. Just borderline random! 😉
How would life be different if Cole had been born first and Aidan had come to you second?
Do you think they've taught you the things they have by being being born first/second?
Posted by: april
I think I would have had a nervous breakdown.
Actually, that is a really hard question. I have never thought about it. And now, I will…. can I think some more on that one?
There is a 'stache kit? Awesome 🙂 Have fun with the folks and we'll see you on the flip side!
My question: Is there a cause you feel particularly passionate about? Why?
Posted by: Nicole
That’s a really good question. i don’t think i’ve found my cause yet, however, there are some things that are near to my heart: cancer research, domestic hunger and human rights, especially for those in our society that somehow are not seemingly included in the “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” promise. I really do believe all causes are important and worthy and that when you can give to those that matter, either through time or money, then by all means, do.
LOL at Shannon's question because I wanted to ask that but thought "maybe Cathy's really just dog-napped someone's dog and doesnt want to tell us!" 😉

No stolen dogs at Chez Zielske.
What did you think of the Office? I hope you liked it – it is the final episode of season three *tonight* and I am hanging out to watch it!! 🙂
Posted by: Kirstie MacGowan
I watched the first season. I think it is hilarious, and slightly uncomfortable at the same time. I have the second season somewhere on my Netflix queue….
What did you buy at Ikea last week?
Posted by: Jen
Three giant glass jars for storing scrapbooking stuff, and these super cute green bowls.
I didn't know you could buy mustaches in a kit. Awesome!
I think I would wear one just for the hell of it.
back to Lost…still watching??
Posted by: suetreiber
Hey Sue…I am. I am. But part of my doesn’t seem to care anymore. I can’t tell you why. Does that make me a bad person? Did I mention I still think Sawyer is smoking hot?
1. whatcha gonna teach at bigpicturescrapbooking? 2. whats your favorite queen song? 3. you & donna d should do a scrapbooking cruise.
Posted by: katie scott
1. I don’t know. What SHOULD i teach? Stacy’s been buggin’ me.
2. Probably it’s “Somebody to Love” or “Bicycle Race”—which i know is a goofy choice, but his voice is amazing in that. Phrasing….pauses, sighs. It just rocks.
3. Two words: MOTION SICKNESS.
You frequently comment on just how much you love your MAC. I am a PC user and have been for many years, however, after hearing such good things about the MAC, I purchased one about 2 years ago. If I had it to do all over again, I would have purchased a new PC instead. My experience with the MAC has been frustrating and non-productive. I even took a class offered at the Apple Store where I made the purchase but that proved a waste of time (there was no structure to the class; just Q&A). I do not find the MAC easy to use, nor is it intuitive. Please help, Cathy! Can you recommend a book or website or online course that I might helpful? Any good resourse would be most appreciated. I really want to learn to use the MAC and hopefully come to appreciate it as much as you!!
Posted by: Marianne
Marianne…i will tell you this: it takes PC users a while to get used to it. See, we Mac users feel like we have no opposable thumbs when working on PCs. There is an author who writes books about the mac and is really good. The name is Robin Williams (not the former Mork) and you’ll find it here: book.
Any chance one might score a kit or instructions to your "Encyclopedia" class you taught last year? Pretty Please?
Posted by: Annabet
Hey Annabet, unfortunately, no…because that class is still being taught at CKU this year, by the talented and fun Carrie Owens! But you know what? It really is a good class! I was justs showing my Mom and Dad this album…totally loving looking at it again.
What is the font you used when making your "Chililicious" pdf?
Thanks!

Posted by: Dianne K. Nelson
Hi Diane: Interstate. One of my all time faves.
Love…Love…Love your blog. It is a breathe of fresh air during the drudgery of my workday…shhhhh don't tell!
I never have any pictures of myself to scrapbook, so now that you are back to posting a few self portraits, can you give a few helpful hints on taking pics to this amateur?
Posted by: Conny
First off, I’m so telling on you… you know, you just have to try goofy things. The old shoot yourself in a mirror trick is fun. So is the hold your super long arms out and snap that way. I think those are more fun that the self-timed, soft focus shots of yesteryear…
Oh yeah!! I am so dying to know the colors/brand of cardstock you used in your album for Aiden in album shortcuts!!
The pink/blue that match the BG perfectly!!!
thank you so much for doing a q/a!!!
Posted by: Katie
Oh man, Katie…you’re going to make me look it up aren’t you? Sigh. Just kidding. It's the Bazzill Canvas texture.
Pink: Blossom
Teal: Lagoon
Cathy~
I love the sheer honesty of your blog. You are one awesome, talented chick. (Neurotic, but in an endearing and facinating way…er, that's meant as a compliment.) Here's my question; I've never sent one of my layouts to a magazine. (Fear of rejection just might be a factor…) Is there any chance for a scrapmag virgin to get "in" at this late date? Or should I just scrap for myself and call it good?
~Fellow Native Washingtonian Natalie
(Move back anytime, sweetie!)
PS You are going to be SWAMPED with questions!!! Don't you know how fabulously popular you are?!
Posted by: Natalie
Hey Natalie…all i’ve ever wanted to be was popular. You’ve no idea how happy i am to hear that at last, i am! Okay…you know….if you have a burning need to submit, then go for it. But seriously? Scrapping for yourself is seriously what matters. Again, I know it’s EASY for me to say this, but I believe it. So should you! That said, don’t be afraid to submit. The stars do have to align to get picked up at most mags only because most of them have an editorial plan for each issue MONTHS in advance. Reader galleries are your best bet, but don’t be sad if you don’t get a call. You still made a kick ass page, right? Exactly.
Somebody already asked about them, but I want to make sure that you divulge your source of moustaches! I have a 17 year old who is desperately wanting to grow a moustache this summer…I can't see it happening without a little help. Do tell!
Thanks!

Sandy…see the very first question! And happy ‘stachin….
you have a unique style and colour sense, were you artistic when younger or in University, did you get your graphic designer degree, did you know you wanted to be a graphic designer, or did you just fall into it. Love your blog, your wit and your obsessions with music, I love music too….
Posted by: lee
Lee…the funny thing is, i didn’t. I mean not really. What i was, was a good writer, even at a young age. I mean, that was my passion. I never was drawn to artistic endeavors at all. My degree isn’t in design, either. It’s in journalism. I realized I loved design once I was out in the work force, at my second job. And then, I studied everything i could get my hands on, and immitated the stuff i loved, and eventually, developed my own style, which is very clean, conservative and reader friendly.
Question: Did you say cigarettes were $4 a pack? Did you smoke in Australia? Did you die at the price here?
Posted by: Linda
Oh, they were more than 4 bucks, and no… i had quit before Australia, like five months prior to going. One of my motivations for quitting, other than, “Jesus, Cathy…it is TIME,” was that i was going to be on a plane for 13 hours and there was NO way i was going to make that flight without a smoke. Ergo…i quit. Think of all the money i’ve saved!
My question:
Will you be getting a dog after Chip goes home?
Posted by: Kelli
As i wrote above, there is a remote possibility that i will. If the stars align…
I just moved to Minneapolis and was wondering if you could fill me in on any of the great scrapbooking stores in the area? I know about Archivers, are there any other good ones to check out?
Posted by: Alicia
Hey Alicia, absolutely. At Har Mar mall, there is an awesome store called Binding Memories, and down Snelling Avenue, another great store called The Scrapbook Shoppe. Happy shopping!
Hey Cathy- Love your blog, so fun to "track along" with another 41 year old with a busy artist life, kids etc- would love to see you do some classes on the East Coast (Vermont) Also- for all your mustach fans out there- the MUSTACHES can be found at Amazon for $5.45- type in MUSTACHES-STYLISH-SET: TOYS & GAMES- what a deal. LOL Jen
Posted by: Jen Churchman
Oh man…you mean i posted a link for naught? ha!
I say ditto to what Katie said – scrapbooking cruise. I can see it now…
PS. "MFRs"…I have GOT to stop laughing out loud out of nowhere at the office! 🙂 I'm really going to have to remember that phrase, though. So appropriate for a bleeding liberal here in oh-so-conservative Orange County.
PPS. And Holymotherofanorphan, your son is the spittin' image of your husband. As if you didn't know, but the comparison just hit me after reading your blog for several months now! Just like my brother and my dad: they're similar, they're similar, and then BOOM! Like twins. Separated by 35 years. Its uncanny!
Posted by: Trude
Again, Trude: motion sickness. Cruise AIN’T happenin’….haha.
And yes…Cole does resemble Dan. It’s proof that dan IS the father afterall. I wasn’t 100 percent sure…
Question: If you were a Hero, what special power would you want to have?
Posted by: Colleen
To make it through the night without having to urinate multiple times. I’m serious.
I have been listening to these essays from a show called "This I Believe" on NPR. Want to share what you most believe in? Not necessarily spritually, just in general, in life.. besides Neil and Pete Yorn! though they're a great start.
Posted by: Madeline R
That’s deep, Madeline. Hmmmm…..
I believe in love, and kindness, and as elementary as it may sound, treating others how you like to be treated. I believe in the whole “I am my brother’s keeper” philosophy, totally. I believe that small changes in any struggle of any kind are the way big changes eventually happen. That's a start…
Hey can you give an update on your library card thing and aliens….Thanks
Posted by: Jennifer Bueck
Library card thing=good. Aliens=still love ‘em, but not like i used to. I’m more into robots now.
Now his mustache I like!!! Very dapper! I may need to get those for my husband and son. Don't you think that would be charming on a 1 year old!?
Here's my question, okay request, but I could state in the form of a question… How do you edit your photos? I'd have to search back through your blog… oh, maybe a recent one of Aidan, they look so bright, I love that. How do you do it? Or do you just take that good of a picture!?
AND I just got a new DSLR (Sony Alpha 100) any suggestions for practicing??
Posted by: Heather H.
I do NOT take that good of photos. I use actions. All the time. In fact, it’s kind of sad, really…LOL! And the best way is simply to practice practicing. Make sense? Take a ton of shots. That's what I always do. Something always turns out decent.
I love, and totally relate to, your OCD-osity. I'm convinced you'd be a great convert to the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" cult. Any chance you'd try a few episodes? I'd be happy to recommend some!
Posted by: Terry
Recommend away!
My only question is… how is Weight Watchers going? I love reading your blog… you make me laugh every day (or at least every day that you post)!!!
Posted by: Shannon
Well…let’s see. I am down 5 pounds from where i started, which i’m feeling really good about. But…between traveling for work and for pleasure, i’ve sort of fallen off extreme points counting. However, after my parents leave, i’m back on the track. I want to hit my goal weight of 140 by summer’s end, and not starve in the process. I’ll keep you posted.
I have a boring question, but we were talking about it at dinner, and I realized I 'knew' someone I could ask! – you mentioned that your kids go to school all year – I know they get more breaks, but area the hours less each day?
Posted by: nic
That is NOT a boring question. In fact, it’s the most brilliant ever! Ahem…. you know, they go the same number of days as any school kid, and the same number of hours. But, they get big three week chunks of time off, three times a year. So…it all balances out to the same time in school. The thing i like? The continuity of education. No more playing catch up for a month in sept. They do get the entire month of august off, though. And that’s nice.
My Questions are:
What kind of wedding did you have?
Does your husband like short hair or does he bug you to grow it long?
Favorite lipstick?
Posted by: Scrapbook
1.We had a wedding on a budget. : ) It was not overly huge, and it was really nice. We were married in a Lutheran church, by my father in law, who is a retired Lutheran pastor. And, we wrote our own vows, which was pretty cool. And dan was the cutest man ever….
2.He likes me as is, which is remarkable. Once i grew my hair out, and i don’t think he knew what to make of it. Mostly, i think, he could care less what I do with my hair as long as he gets to see me naked once in a while.
3. Don’t wear lipstick and haven’t for years. I’m a gloss girl. My fave? Aveda Gloss in Grapefruit Pulp, in the tube.
Love your photos of your kiddos – they are both so you & Dan, it's amazing.
i like Scrapbook's question about your wedding and the one of my own is…will there be "Clean & Simple Scrapbooking – the Threepeat"?!
oh! and i got the software for C&S at Mike's the other day! what a surprise! any Easter Eggs there?! :o)
Posted by: valerie
Valerie, i really don’t know if there would ever be a threepeat. I don’t know if i have that in me…at least not in that format. I would love to come up with some new idea or concept for a book, but for now…nothin’s in my head. Any ideas?
Question:
To Cathy or anyone really, How do you do the white letters on colored paper? Are they rub-on? It always looks so clean and crisp.
Posted by: patti
Hey Patti…not always rubons. Actually, you make a text box, on your computer, like in MS Word, change the background color to whatever you like, then change the type color to white. Then print. That’s how you get it to look like that. Uses a lot of ink toner, but so worth it.
My question is who do you think missed who more when your blog was the off the air last fall?
Did you miss us more than we missed you or did we miss you more?
Also, my husband and I are going on a three week trip in August are you available to dog sit?
Thanks, Love you!
Posted by: Cathy M
1. I missed you more.
2. Where do you live? and does your dog liked to be talked to in a baby voice and kissed constantly? I could be your girl.
Hey Cathy!
Do you watch Jericho? I just heard that it has been cancelled for next season. Let's start an all out boycott on CBS. You are the woman to do it with your bloggin power. Thought this seemed very worthy of viewer mail. Help Skeeter, Cathy help him!
Sue
Posted by: Sue M
Sue…i have never seen it. It must be good if you want to boycott! Go YOU!
i'm a photography student at the academy of art university in san francisco and just recently had to shoot another gosh darn self portrait (seems like every class needs at least two…and you can't recycle! darn it!) anyways…the point of this (i'm on my second glass of wine since i just turned in my LAST FINAL! WOOHOO! so that should explain the weirdness of this post…notice i said "should". anyways…) is to say that i was inspired by your "mirror self portraits". so thanks for the idea! i really like how it turned out…which is unusual for me and my self portraits. (if you really want to see how it turned out…check out my blog. it's posted at the end of the post entitled: final project. finally. not that you really want to see it…but heck…why not throw it out there?)
Posted by: katie
Looks pretty cool to me! Go you.
Gads, I love ya Cathy. 🙂
And although I've often wanted to ask you a ton of questions over the past months, I'm drawing a total blank right now, wouldn't you know.
The only thing I can think of right now is,
since you have a connection of sorts to Montreal, would you like to come up here and teach some C&S goodness? 🙂 I know it's a total longshot, but I have to ask! I'd make sure the class(es) would be filled to the brim, and I'd be a willing travel guide. Plus dh is a chef, so you'd eat well. 😉 Deal?
I also have a dog named Lily who fairly resembles Chip, so you might feel slightly more at home. 😉
Oh, thought of more…..
Do you watch GA?
Who are the scrappers that inspire you?
I've asked you this before, but what lens(es)do you use and do you use actions on your pics? They're great.
Posted by: melanie
whoa, mel…you gots the questions!
1. I would LOVE to see Montreal some day. But this year, it won’t be as a teacher….as i’m not teaching this year!
2. What is GA? OHHHHHHHHH….Greys? Oh, you KNOW it. LOVE that show.
3. Ali insipres me. My friend Tara does too. So does Stacy Julian. She oozes that stuff.
4. My current fave lens is my Nikkor 1.8. 50mm. That’s it! I love it. For the DOF control. And yes, I use actions.
I can't think of anything witty to say prior to asking my questions…so here goes.:)
1. You mentioned that you compiled your neighbor's blog into a booklet for her family after her death. How did you do that? Copy/paste/print? Did you have it bound at a printer?
2. You've mentioned church once or twice. What church do you attend?
Posted by: Trena
1. I simply copied all the content, and designed a simple 8.5 x 11, two-sided design, and put them into binders from Russell and Hazel. I printed them on my laser printer here at my home.
2.Well, attend is a loose term for me. We are members of St. Paul Reformation Lutheran Church, an exceptionally liberal ELCA church. Dan teaches Sunday School there, and has for years. I’m hit or miss there. But that’s a whole can of worms best left for another day…
Oh….I so totally have to ask a question. However it may make you wonder if all us Aussies are just a bit cuckoo.
So: If you could be any kitchen appliance/utensil, what would it be and why?
p.s. CZ….You rock!
Posted by: Lauren
I would be my new Le Cruset dutch oven. Reliable, lime green and sexy.
ok… here's my question/request.
What does a Cathy playlist sound like? 10 songs. Ok 12. Could be your favs. Could be some current stuff that's making you happy. Could be some classics. Could be some desert island essentials. Could be some sentimental favs. Could be a mixture.
🙂
Posted by: lisamcg
meant to write – deserted island.
Im a horrible speller. Sorry.
Posted by: lisamcg
Horrible speller or not, Miss McG…i adore your question… and you, of course…
now…let’s see.
You know what’s funny? Dan’s been working for 10 years on his all-time top 40 mix. His fave songs, of his lifetime, that have been top 40 hits. And stuff like that is HARD to come up with….
I would be able to pick artists easier.
But let’s try this in no particular order:
1.Family Snapshot by Peter Gabriel—it has everything a good prog rock song needs: a killer story, melancholoy, bizarre arranging, and an end that will make a grown man cry. Check it out.
2.Closer to Fine by Indigo Girls—you cannot not feel happy when hearing this. That, and i’m still trying to play the bloody thing on my guitar.
3. Perfect Circle by R.E.M.—just so pretty. So quintessentially R.E.M.
4. The Luckiest by Ben Folds Five—try not to weep. Go on…try.
5. Distant Sun by Crowded House—the sexiest vocal ever by one of the best song writers of a generation, and the sentiment—oh my God—when he says, “I don’t pretend to know what you want, but I offer love…” Now THAT is a man who is trying to understand women.
6. All My Life by Foo Fighters—It just rocks out. And it’s apparently a very raunchy song.
7. I Will Follow You into the Dark by Death Cab for Cutie—new song that i am just loving.
8. Jesus of Suburbia by Green Day—because it’s like five great songs in one!
9. Picture of Jesus by Ben Harper—it is just a slice of vocal magic.
10. I’m the Man by Joe Jackson—if only for the line, “Pretty soon now, you know I’m gonna make a comeback…” I ADORE people who plan their own comebacks.
And that is just what i’m thinking right now. The list could change tomorrow. And likely will!
Dear Chip,
I have so enjoyed your journey with Cathy. I am going to miss your blog entries and your insight of your foster mother Cathy and her family. Yes, I know she has given you a kiss on the lips, taken you for walks, and showed you the art of "LOVE" and her scrapbooking talents. She thinks the world of you. I know you have bonded with her. Even when you were staring at her, with one ear back, puzzled at the loud music she was listening too, and singing. You have to admit, you will miss her too! We will miss you! Cathy asked if we had any questions for her. Instead, I have a question for you, Chippie! Will you continue to blog? Will there be a Chip Blog?
Posted by: Sheryl
Chip? Chippie? She’s not answering at this time.
1)Are most of your pics straight from the camera or do you do post-processing and … if you DO post-process, do you have a favorite action?
2)If you had it to do all over again, would you buy a Nikon or a Canon? Or something else?
3)Who is your favorite online photo developer?
4)What is your favorite lens at the moment?
Posted by: Kristal
Hey Kristal, let’s see:
1. Totally post processed up the wazoo.
2. Canon, i think. I’d save and get that 5D.
3. I use Shutterfly and am really happy with them.
4. My 50mm 1.8 Nikkor.
How do you pronounce Zielske?
Posted by: Georgia
“ZIL-SKI” Simple. Direct. two syllables. Not Zileskee. Lots of people say Zileskee. Just Zil, short 'i' and the word, "ski". Don't feel badly for not knowing. Stacy Julian mispronounced my name for two years, and i work with her.
QUESTION:
Are you regretting your q & A idea yet?? No kidding, my real question is did you ever take up that interior designer's offer to help you with your bedroom?? Hanging out to hear what happened there, even though it is totally none of my business.
Posted by: Nicole Southworth
Nicole…1. Yes! (Just kidding, this is actually fun!)
3. No, i didn’t. Because i am a loser and never can fathom taking up people on their kind and generous offers.
You're in the Twin Cities, right? Is Valleyfair still around in Shakopee? Used to go there every year as a kid! (I grew up in Fergus Falls, MN and I still sound like Ole and Sven out here in Baw-ston!)
Posted by: Tanya
Yep. I live in St. Paul. Uff da! I've only recently adopted the accent, mostly for use a parties.
Hey Cathy, so is Cole finally getting all those play dates he wished for? And as a corollary to that, how did you and your hubby raise such sweet, kind and fun kids? As someone looking forward to starting a family in the next several years, I am once excited and terrified and any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks, you rock!
Posted by: Cari
Cari, i have NO clue as to how to raise happy kids. I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for a good health plan when they decide they need therapy! (Oh, and no…Cole still only has a couple of buddies, but i hear it takes boys longer!) I think though, letting kids know that all emotions are part of life…well, that's Dan and I's only real parenting thing. Life is life. Live it, and have some fun while you go.
First of all, I just want to say how happy I am that your blog started back up.
Now the question: other than the scrapbooking you do for work, how much time do you spend scrapbooking when you are not at crops or events? Essentially, I can NEVER find the time to scrap at home and I have been a scrapbooker for about 10 years now! How do you ignore the laundry or the dishes or the phone or the family and make time to scrapbook? Or is the secret that you have to get out of the house? (Cause that seems to be my biggest problem.)
Posted by: Maggie Finley
Maggie, Maggie…i think this is a problem SO many women face. Myself included. I actually never scrapbook at crops, occasionally at scrap night with some of my girlfriends, but usually, it’s something i do in a solitary setting, at home. I find that i’m not always inspired to do it anyway, so most of the time lately, I’m okay with not having the time. I think, for some women, getting out of the house is the best thing, because then, all your other obligations, and Lord knows there are a ton, can be left befind for a time. Good luck carving out some time! : )
Ok, so I posted these questions in the pub on two peas but I would love to have your take on them too. please and thank you!!
#1: How has scrapbooking affected/changed your life?
#2: What kind of impact, if any, has scrapbooking had on your generation (or your family)?
#3: Have you personally witnessed something positive happen to yourself or another person as a result of the scrapbooking industry?
#4: What do you want scrapbooking (as your hobby or as an industry) to be 5 years from now? 10 years from now?
thanks C!!
Posted by: Christine Campbell
1.I’ve made really great friends, and it was the catalyst for getting a great job that affords me so many positive things.
2.I’m not sure about that one. Other than, because of scrapbooking, i have this job that provides healthcare for everyone! LOL!
3.I think everything i’ve experiences has been positive, being in this industry, at least for me. Meeting great people, traveling to cool places, feeling the power of women telling their stories. That’s some pretty positive stuff.
4. I never think much further than the end of the week. : )
hmmmm ok…I've been a lurker but here goes! How did you get into the magazine world? I have been trying FOREVER to get some sort of creative/writing job with a crafty/scrappy kind of mag. with no luck
🙁 HELP 🙁
Posted by: Dawn
Hey Dawn, i get that question alot, actually. I lucked out because my first job was at a small employee magazine for a chain of grocery stores in Coppell, Texas. (Minyard Food Stores, for you in the DFW area). And my second job was for another small magazine. And then it just went on from there.
I got in as an editor. I ended up as a graphic designer. I’m not sure how to explain it other than that. Having a journalism degree, I’m thinking, was fairly critical in getting into the publication realm. And my design style and personality just fit with the high impact deadline driven nature of publishing.
Do you have a background in writing? Sometimes, a great query letter for an article can spark the attention of an editor. It’s always worth a try! Good luck!
Do people "recognize" you on the street? I know if I saw you I'd probably stutter and say some stupid things then scream like a 12 year old little girl when you were out of earshot while jumping up and down.
So that leads me to another question, do you worry about strangers knowing so much about your life? I put up a public blog and had some psycho harassing me for a bit. So I made it private to protect my family. I would just worry since you are so popular and people know so much about your kids and stuff. Does it worry you?
Posted by: Susan
Rarely do i ever get recognized. I’m not that famous, people. You have to believe me. HA! I don’t worry, because so far, i’ve been given nothing to worry about, but never say never. I definitely have some personal boundaries that if they ever got breached, I’d be done and done with the public life of blogging. Absolutely.
So all you psychos out there, go write crazy letters to your local newspapers and leave bloggers alone. GO NON-PSYCHO PEOPLE!
I would first like to say how much your posts CRACK ME UP! Your sense of humor is hi-larious. Okay, I will get serious now. I am trying to break into the world of scrapbooking for a living and I have a couple of questions.
1. If I wanted to pursue getting published and possibly working for a magazine, what advice do you have for going about it?
2. I have opened a small business that aims to make albums for people. The idea is that people will give me the pictures they want in an album and then I will put the pics into layouts and voila, an album is made! But, I am having trouble getting people to understand what my service is. I have made a blog,
http://sweetbrierscraps.blogspot.com and I have included my layouts and some of the other little projects that I have worked on, in the hopes that it will help people "get it" as it were. Any thoughts on how to get thru to the public?
THANKS!!!
Lara
Posted by: Lara St. Peter
1. Hey Lara….first, if you’d like to get published, just start sending stuff in. That’s really the first step! However, to get a job working for a magazine, it depends on what you’d like to do… there are administrative positions at any mag, there are editor positions, there are design positions, there are ad rep positions, and so forth. Many times, you do need a background that qualifies you to work at a magazine, such as a degree in journalism, or graphic design or business.
2. Ah…marketing. You know, I’m thinking that word of mouth would be your best avenue, but honestly, I don’t have much to offer you, idea wise. Do you have any local mom groups? that you could maybe design a flyer, with photos to show what it is that you have created and offer? Some mom’s out there wish they could do that, but don’t have time…. just a thought.
My question is: Do you want to be Best Friends? Seriously, I think we could be. Yeah, yeah, I know your BFF's w/ Tara, Donna and many others but surely you have room for one more! Love your blog, love your humour, oh heck, I just love you! No, I'm not a crazy stalker…AND lucky for you, I live no where near St.Paul!
Posted by: Stephanie
Oh Stephanie…i don’t know how to say this, but… my BFF card is full right now, however…if anyone drops off (and people have no idea how close they are to that very thing happening!) I’ll call you!
hmm..love the laundry shelf. simpleton? I've also heard lately, Modern Minimalist.
When I heard that term, I sighed with contentment, knowing that's the perfect phrase to describe me. (I'm in a family full of packrats and clutter-gatherers..and have a lone sister in law who is a fellow modern minimalist.)
My question for you is:
how do you get the personal style that you have – which looks so fresh and clean..and it looks like you don't wear makeup. Your haircut is fabulous. umm..that's not a question.
Q1: What products do you use for your hair/face/body?
Q2: for a special night out, do you change your look or add a special lipstick or eyeshadow?
Posted by: sunny
Oh Sunny…aren’t you sweet? I don’t feel all that fresh and clean, well…i mean, I do feel clean because I shower and all. Hmmm. Let’s see.
Makeup. I’ve sort of let got of mascara, and that’s likely my biggest downfall, because whenever i see photos of myself, i think: “God, do i REALLY look that tired?” But i hate putting it on, and even more, taking it off. So i save it for special occasions. Like, grocery shopping.
I use Bobbi Brown stuff, primarily, and i love it. Always have. I like their skin tint, and their powders and blushes.
So…for that special night out my big secret: mascara. HA!
And as far as my hair goes… I actually love my hair. It’s the only feature, most of the time, that i know isn’t going to wig out on me…no pun intended. Plus, i look LAME with long hair. Trust.
I find it sooooooo funny that I am following Sunny's questions about cosmetics, b/c I wanted to tell you that to me MAC is makeup, not a computer!
Anyhow…I was probably the only one laughing at that…
So my question is:
What song best describes your life? Not your fave song, necessarily, but the lyric that most captures your CZ essence??
Posted by: beth opel
Hey Miss Opel…you know, i was also a MAJOR Mac junkie in my day…. sigh.
Okay, this is a good question….and right now my mind is sort of reeling with lyrics and snippets. I have a few that while i don’t know if they capture my essence, they certainly capture my imagination, and always have:
1. From “Humdrum” by Peter Gabriel, his first album: “I ride tandem, with the random, things don’t run the way I planned them, in the humdrum.” Love that.
2. And then there’s this whole passage from Tom Waits, “The House Where Nobobdy Lives” that totally is the most grounding lyric ever:
So if you find someone
Someone to have, someone to hold
Don't trade it for silver
Don't trade it for gold
I have all of life's treasures
And they are fine and they are good
They remind me that houses
Are just made of wood
What makes a house grand
Ain't the roof or the doors
If there's love in a house
It's a palace for sure
2. And then, I guess I’d have to say most of Sir Mix-a-Lot’s catalog really speaks volumes…
Whatever happened to Faye Morrow-Bell?

Hey Stefanie, I think she went to work for Lil Davis Designs.
Have you ever seen a ghost?

Read lots of books and took several online courses.
You are AWESOME! And way cool. 🙂 My question is: Will you be attending the upcoming CKU-Orlando (please, please, pretty please!) or any other Florida event? I'm in Miami, planning to drive the four hours up to Orlando for CKU in October and I am so dying to meet you.
Posted by: Vanessa
So sorry, Vanessa…I won’t be at any events this year that involve teaching in person. : (
G'day Cathy, i really enjoy reading your blog and always smile when you mention my fellow countryman Neil!!.
my question is this…
How does someone go about asking you, Donna, Stacy, etc if you'd participate in/contribute to a small new scrapbook business in the form of an interview, LO or page sketch?. and would there be a fee for doing this?.
ekkk…..two questions…sorry!!.
opps…a third…..well a request really….please please please come to the UK…i'd move heaven and earth to attend a class of yours!!. i could bribe you with some Split Enz era Neil Finn( and Tim Tams!!)….please!!!.
Posted by: kiwirach
Cheers, well…i guess if you email us, although I can't speak for the other ladies. That’s the best way for more info. I hope to some day go to the UK! Tams and all!
Hi Cathy. I gotta say you rock! You are going to be one busy woman answering all these questions and I am adding another to the lot!
My question is will you be coming back to Australia anytime in the near future? I literally had my first class of scrapbooking the night before you were here and had never heard of you! My teacher showed my your book that first night and I haven't turned back since. You insire me and I would love to go to one of your classes. So please come back to Aussie sometime soon. Thanks!
Posted by: Em
Hey Em…man, i wish i were coming back. I had such an amazing time. So for now, the answer is no. : ( but never say never.
Where about in Africa did you live?
Posted by: chantille
I lived in Monrovia, Liberia, on the west central coast. : )
Oh, forgot to ask when are you coming to teach in the UK, we love you here!
Posted by: chantille
Unfortunately, not any time soon! : (
Goodness, so many questions! Here are two that I've been wanting to ask you, regarding photography/ps:
1) You talk every once in a while about reflector kits… can you give us a rundown of exactly what you use to enhance the light in our homes when you take pictures? Do you like the reflector kit you have – they have different sizes and I'd love to hear what worked (or didn't) for you.
2) Now that you've been digital for a while, I would LOVE to ask – what are your settings in photoshop to make your digital color photos into b/w? Not so much how to make a good contrast (ie channel mixer) but how to get the warmth in the b/ws. I load one of the ps duotone settings to make my b/w, but wondered what you do.
Thanks so much! I would LOVE to hear your thoughts!
🙂 Rebecca in Seattle
Posted by: Redheadmomma
1. I have a reflector, but i never use it. Honestly. Isn’t that sad? I can’t even tell you what it is supposed to do. I occasionally used it for portraits a long time ago and it definitely does improve the overall lighting. I have a reflector set that has a gold/silver disc, and a diffuser. If that helps….
2. I use actions for B&W, so i don’t really know what the settings or steps are. I’ve never thought of doing duotones, but…i’d have to think that’s a good idea to warm up the shots…almost how you would create a sepia tone, yes? You can do an internet search for B&W conversion options and i bet a lot come up!
What was it like to be a HoFer with Tara? (I asked her the same question)
Do you have an iPod and what color is it?
Posted by: Michelle
Hey Michelle…
1. It was like both of us making the varsity cheer squad. SO cool.
2. I have a video iPod. It is white.
Hi Cathy,
How fun to initiate a Q&A.
Q1: How did you develop your writing skills? You have such a gift with words. This is an area that I struggle with in scrapbooking.
Q2: You always seem to have fresh ideas; from your blog, to your scrapbooking pages, to your other hobbies (music, knitting). Where do you get YOUR inspiration?
Q3: Would you consider sharing the tribute albums that you made for your neighbor Mary's family? My mom passed several years ago and I would love to do something like that for my own family. Going back to Q1&2, I could use a little inspiration.
Peace. Hope you have fun with the 'rents. Bring them over to Mpls and checkout my neighborhoods shining jewel – the Birchwood cafe. However, stick with the lattes at Espresso Royale, which in my opinion are the best in the Twin Cities.
Posted by: LaurieS
Hey Laurie…
1. I always, always had a love of writing. Since I was a kid, a little kid. I think that when you love something, you try hard to do it well. That’s always been my goal. I hate to say it comes naturally, but over the years, I’m fairly certain I’ve reached that conclusion.
2. My inspiration comes from every day stuff. Really. Images. Songs. Things people say. Silly stuff. I try really hard to pay attention, you know?
3. Unfortunately, I don’t have any of the binders left. They were simply all the content from Mary’s blog, layed out in a simple 8.5 x 11 page design, and printed two sided. Very simple. It wasn’t about a cool look and feel…just Mary’s words. : )
And thanks for the ERC shoutout. I’ll be sure to tell Dan!
your iron looks older than that bottle of rubbing alcohol you kept around for 17 years. is it?
but i know what you mean…there's something strangely delicious about "renovating" the laundry room. i do it myself. weekly. it's called peeling the lint out the dryer. i feel fabulous afterward.
Posted by: Elizabeth
I’ve had that iron since i was in college. So right you are!
oh darn typepad, I just rambled out a comment–and poof typepad deemed it not worthy and sent it to blog-limbo.
anyway–what I WAS saying was that all the cool girls have a stockpile of gay boyfriends–so you just keep goin on with your bad self. I certainly deserve a toaster or a savings bond or something by this point–knowing that I've been just enough of a hag to convince a boy or two to climb the fence and join the "family"….it means I have someone to go shopping with and talk about Paris Hilton for the rest of my life—or her's. Oh, I still have to scrap my senior prom from forever and a day ago–my date was the real prom "queen" darlin. FAB-U-LOUS! He's now the director of the Chicago Gay Men's Choir and rockin out his disco-life.
I do have a page I did after CHA winter of a great drag show I went to with my best friend down in Long Beach, CA……that's right, home of snoop dog. He wasn't at the show though………I digress……..
Be careful not to harm any republicans this weekend–just keep telling yourself that they're really just fiscally conservative democrats, not republicans, and all will be good.
Toodles!

hmmmmm,
okay, what's your favorite font?
and followup question, when are you coming down to mankato, so I can bump into you and have coffee? 🙂

My all-time favorite font is probably Adobe Garamond. Not sure why.
Crowded House and Pete Yorn are coming to Winnipeg on September 8. It's ONLY a 7 hour drive north of Minneapolis.

Only 7 hours? Hmmm… sounds enticing.
So last weekend were you eating food that had so FEW points there was no need to count them? OR were you eating food that contained SEVERAL points and you were just taking the weekend off from point counting?

P.S. Sorry if this is a repeat question, I can't believe there are SO MANY people out there that want an answer, I started reading them but got tired half way through and will have to finish up on another day! 🙂

Noel…i totally left the program for that weekend, much like i’m doing this weekend while my parents are in town. However, come Monday morning, I’m back in the saddle…so to speak. I’m trying to be less black and white, and go with the flow a bit more. I don’t have to lose every pound in a matter of a few weeks.
i second the where did you get those fab moustaches question!!

Cathy, you are my all time favorite scrapbook designer…and your blog is always entertaining. You make me smile everyday =)
Hope I didn’t miss the chance to ask you just one question. Are you going to do another Clean and Simple book? Those two books are *simply* the best. Your style really speaks to me.
Also, I have to tell you I love the letters from Chip the dog…she is a very wise dog. =)
Jenny says
I just had to say that, YES! I actually read your entire post! Thanks for being real and even answering the same question multiple times! I really missed you when you were not blogging and love to see what you have to say everyday! 🙂
Margie says
Looks like I should have asked this a few days ago to be included in your huge effort of asking so many questions! What is the buzz in the industry about China? I may be moving there soon and am trying to find out if there is any scrapbooking over there at all. I have the feeling there is not, but it must be inevitable in the next five years to a decade. Have you heard anything or do you know anything?
Thanks for your insight!
Deborah says
is it too late to ask another question? are you going to keep the question/answer thing a regular thing? (say maybe once a month? ) I definately enjoyed reading it! =)
Oh and another question…are you back into scrapbooking again? You mentioned you weren’t doing as much, so are you back on the wagon (so to speak) full time with scrapbooking? Just wondered!
Erin Noll says
I wanted to let you know that Peter Gabriel has a duet with Angelique Kidjo on her new cd-Djin Djin. She is a really cool African artist and she has many different duets on the cd. Check it out. You rock.
Katie Scott says
Cathy, I think you should teach a long weekly class at bigpicturescrapbooking and you could just do a project or page idea a week but have it long running so you could charge lots of money 😉
Also I think you should do a scrapbooking page about how they use punk rock music in commercials now which must mean we’re getting old and financially able enough to go on cruises, buy minivans, go on vacation, etc. (I know you don’t do cruises but they’re using Iggy Pop to sell them! and I just heard the Pogues on another commercial. And they had a Ramones one out a few years ago. )
Cheers.
Nicole says
Awesome!!! That was way cool of you to do AND one heck of a bunch of questions. We are very verbal bunch. 🙂
And who knew you were a Tom Waits fan (*pitter patter* – I love me some poignant, gravelly-throated singing) AND a Sir Mix-a-lot fan?! Craziness!
Save a few of those GW Nut Muffins for the bake sale 😉 Have fun!

I known you have put down the needles as of late but I was wondering if the felted purses you sent Tara were from the same pattern you posted or did you alter it to make larger purses? The photos of her daughter with your purse’s were so sweet. I have put that little pattern to great use. It makes a great little birthday present. Thanks for all the sharing you do, Tami.

Enjoyed your questions and your humor, Cathy. Here is one for some other day, that I thought maybe you could shed light on…my 11-year-old daughter is in the throes of ‘Girl World’ (Ever read ‘Queen Bees and Wannabes’? If not, every mom of an adolescent girl SHOULD)…and all the drama that only girls can conjure up. It is just melodrama EVERY day after school. Has Aidan hit this stage yet, and if so, what is your strategy coaching her along to deal with it all? Why do we girlz DO this to one another?? I am assuming you and she talk about practically anything. You seem like that kind of mom. I admit, I get emotional about the whole issue, especially when other girls hit below the belt. I continue to encourage my daughter to rise above it all. Just wondered if you’ve encountered it much yet, and how you’ve handled it. Didn’t know you were a psychologist, huh….Well, YOU ARE!

George Bush muffins–are those the ones that get into your digestive system and then refuse to leave? 🙂

Do you have your ducks in a row yet? … (just kidding!)
Here’s the real one…
If you could sit down and spend the day with three people (past or present) who would they be and what is one question that you would like to ask each of them? (can be different questions for each)

Thanks for the pattern!
