Today I'm announcing my newest workshop coming in mid-November to Big Picture Classes.
The class is called Two Views. The project is an album of prompts designed to be answered and recorded by two people. This class got started in my head about a year ago when I had the idea of making an album wherein me and my then 15-year-old daughter, Aidan, would create a sort of she said/she said type of album designed around a series of pre-determined prompts.
I wanted to find a way to save two voices—hers and mine—and celebrate where and if they merged, or where for sure they differed.
The nice thing about Aidan is that a) she's crafty, and b) she likes to write. But as much as we both loved the idea and were excited about it, we just sort of sat on it until mid-Summer, when I said, "Okay, let's do this thing."
The result is an album that I may love above all others I've completed to date. A document of two completely different perspectives—mine and hers—in one, sweet little 8 x 8 album. I created a class around this project realizing that there are many ways two voices can come together in a project, beyond simply a mother and a daughter. It could be sisters, best friends, spouses or partners—any two people who like the challenge of tackling some questions that are designed to reveal little slices of authenticity for each person who undertakes the project.
And this is something that you don't have to be a full-blown scrapbooker to complete. Sure, I've tossed in a bit of the printing/production aspects of crafting that we all enjoy, and yes, you'll learn some digital tips and tricks along the way, but you can recruit anyone to participate with you. You sign up, and help them get set up, and off you go.
Although the class doesn't begin until November, when you sign up you'll be able to download a PDF of the prompts to give you a chance to get the creative wheels turning. In this way, when class begins, you'll be ready to jump in and start applying your words to the class templates.
If you have any questions about this workshop, please post in the comments and I'm happy to answer. Two Views runs November 8–21. You can read the full class description by clicking here. Registration is open now.
I hope to see you there!

This concept sounds great! I immediately thought of a spouse thing – being fairly new parents and all – but you are right, so many possibilities. Ah, only reading this post gets the ideas going already. Thanks!

All signed up. With Claire in her last year of high school (and in boarding) this will be a great way to keep connected. I can’t wait to get started. Thanks, as always 🙂

Yay! : )

I just signed up! Brian and I have been running in different directions lately. What a great way to reconnect and provide something for Jack to look back at when he’s old enough to wonder what his folks were like when we were young(er). Thanks, Cathy!

I’m getting better. This time I actually read the description of the class before I slapped down my money. Usually if it’s a CZ class, I just sign up!!
Good timing as I am having some struggles with my almost 16 yo. I hope this is an opportunity for him and me to come together and communicate through our writing.
Thanks, Cathy!

Cathy, You wouldn’t necessarily have to use the same person for all the responses, would you? I mean, one question might be good for dh and me to discuss. Another question might be suitable for me and my sister to exchange views, etc. Right? Or should all the questions (prompts) be answered/discussed by the same two people?

There is something about your classes that makes me want to not only complete the project, but also create several versions of it!!! I loved completing the AE class for myself, and immediately started collecting words for my sons, my daughter, my husband, and my future daughter-in-law… now, I see this description, and right away I think of completing it with my daughter, but would love to with my sons, my husband, my best friend. 🙂 Thanks for a great class! I will definitely be checking this one out!!!

Youre a genius. You could totally mix it up. Featuring Two Views from all sorts of people. Thats brilliant. Yes!

I, WE, signed up! We are empty nesters or new to college life so our family of four will be doing this together. Luckily, they just have to answer the prompts and I get to scrapbook them. Thank you!

Cathy, your Supply List links for patterned paper and album take me to a wide variety of each. Is is the Storybook album? And what paper pack did you use, if it’s still available? You probably want us to choose our own, but I like your album, and don’t have time to browse scrapbook stores for my own choices!
Becky says
Hi Cathy,
I can’t wait for this class. I too was wondering what album you chose. There aren’t many choices for 8 x 8 albums. I also liked your album bu wasn’t sure what one it was.
cathy says
Hey Marilyn, I did use the StoryBook album. The 8 x 8. And I used an older American Crafts paper called Joyful Day Glitter Finish 12 x 12 Daydream. Im not sure if thats available anymore. Thats part of the problem of creating something and then making a class. : ) Honestly, you only need white card stock and one line of paper. If you pick something that is two-sides (which is what my AC paper was) you just alternate from each side. Its a very minimal amount of products. Let me know if you have any other questions!
cathy says
There must be something up with that link! Let me check it out. I used the 8 x 8 StoryBook album. : )

I think what Big Picture does is provide links for as many albums as possible! Ill have them change this, if they can!

Those are the set of albums. The same one I am using. : )
Im going to have that link in the supply list changed. They just want people to know that any 8 x 8 album will do!

What a cool idea Cathy, love that you did with your daughter. Really like the name for the class too.
Glenda says
I would love to try this with my parents who are in their 80s. Would this work to get both of their perspectives and perhaps mine as well?
cathy says
I cant see why not! You could ask the questions, record their answers, and combine them if you like!
