About six months ago I got a call from a lovely Canadian woman named Catherine.
Now you know how I feel about Canada, right? No? Well I adore Canada. I grew up just a few hours south of British Columbia and every relative I have hails from the Great White North, so any time I get a chance to speak with a Canadian, I instantly feel closer to home.
Turns out Catherine was the publisher of a magazine I was very familiar with, Scrapbook & Cards Today, a magazine that we in the scrapbook industry also refer to as The Last Scrapbook Mag Standing. She wondered if I’d be interested in writing for them and because I love writing and scrapbooking and Canada, I said, “Hell yes!”
Well maybe I didn’t swear, but I definitely answered in the affirmative.
You see I miss the days of my editor/art director gig at Simple Scrapbooks. I was very good at my job there. I know how to write a column. It’s one of the ways I feel like my journalism degree really did pay off. It is in my wheelhouse, as they say.
So now I’m thrilled to be part of the family at Scrapbook & Cards Today. This team cares passionately about bringing ideas and inspiration to scrapbookers and crafters just like you and me. They also care about supporting all those wonderful companies who make the products we love to play with. Beginning with this issue, I have a column titled Clean & Simple, and my plan is to write about ways to save your memories that don’t require a degree in fine art or a masterful handling of UTEE. I keep it simple, y’all. Always have, always will.
Granted, sometimes my simple might require a little digital know-how, but I plan to include ideas for ways to maximize those digital tools you might already have laying around.
The best thing about this mag? You can download it for free and view it right on your computer.
I won’t lie though. Getting a hard copy of a printed magazine, with that fresh ink smell… there is something about it that’s very special.
Read the Fall issue here, or to become a subscriber (because you love that fresh ink smell, too), click here.
BONUS FOR YOU! Scrapbook & Cards Today has a page of free downloads from this issue, featuring my most recent Make a Page Monday layout. (All links can be found at the bottom of their Free Downloads page.)
Also check out their blog this weekend. There might be a giveaway for a certain class I’ve got coming up in October called Me: The Abridged Version.

Congrats Cathy! That is fabulous news. I miss your old column and will be looking forward to reading your new one!

I miss the old days of magazines that you could hold, curl up with on the couch and savor, and dog-ear ideas and products, so I decided to subscribe to this one, even though it is free on-line. I have to say I kind of love it. So much scrap goodness all in one spot feels like a real treat. I love that you are now a contributor, so congrats on that and thanks for working to keep the scrapbooking love alive.
JensHappyPlace says
Whole heartedly agree, CarrieH! 🙂
Cathy Zielske says
Yes! I miss it too. It’s kind of cool to have it in hand. 🙂

Enjoyed the magazine! Thanks for introducing me! Loved your article. I just need to have your voice on repeat in my head telling me that more crap does not make a creative LO.
P.S. editor’s note: is it “Scrapbook and Cards” as opposed to Scrapbook”S” and cards? Always got your back, Cathy.
Cathy Zielske says
Okay… just call me dense. DOH! I knew that. I knew that! (Okay, apparently I did not know that.) 😉 Thanks for the catch!
Michelle t says
Great news, how awesome! Look forward to your columns. Michelle t.
Oh, thanks so much for the template in the magazine.
Cathy Zielske says
You are welcome!

Awesome! I think my mom gets this magazine still (she being of the paper scrapbook only persuasion and card maker extraordinaire). I’ll have to steal it from her for a read. 😉
I’m all about the hard copy mags. They may sit around for a month or two gathering dust until I find the time to dig in, but if I subscribe digitally it’s a guarantee it’ll never get read! (And besides…you can’t tear the pages out of a digital mag and tape them to the wall for a couple weeks to decide if you really do think that idea would work in that space.)
Isabel says
Congrats for the new gig, Cathy! I love your article and can wait for the new one. Have a great weekend 🙂

So…um…yeah. I’m like a ten year old stalker. I’ve read and loved all over you for like ten years and never commented. Total f’ing stalker. Anyway. Today is special. Today I’m going to finally comment because I took the picture that’s on the front of that magazine. I contributed to the same magazine that has your name on the front and your brilliance inside of it. So that means that your name and my name are in the same magazine and that right there makes me so excited I feel like I’m gonna throw up. It’s an honor Cathy. A serious f’ing honor. (Oh and as usual, the column is fantastic!) : )
Cathy Zielske says
Well damn, girl…. you’re the shizz! Because that photo is delicious!
And thank you for leaving a comment. And thank you for the suggestion of an f-bomb, because that tells me you’re my kinda girl.
eff-yeah! 🙂

Dude. I’m so scrapbooking this whole conversation. (My husband is currently shaking his head in confusion but I don’t care.) Fist pump!

Fabulous — was not familiar with this magazine and do so miss the paper and ink of SS (and others). I ordered my subscription. Hope it will get me out of my digital rut and prompt me to do some more “real” and hybrid pages.
Cathy Zielske says
Yay! It’s printed so beautifully, on such nice paper. Sigh. You will not be disappointed!

I am so happy that you are part of this, now my favourite scrapbooking mentors You, Ali Edwards and Nicole Harper are all part of this publication. I have been a fan for years. You now have to come ‘up’ to one of the crop and creates and teach a class. I would be in heaven. PS I am taking your class next month and am SUPER pumped!!!
Jennifer says
Love Scrabook And Cards! Love that your going to be a part of it! Maybe you can come to one of their crop and create events! Like the one in Winnipeg Manitoba? Hint hint!
Cathy Zielske says
It’s only an 8-hour drive from St. Paul! 😉

YAYAYAYAY! I am a regular reader, because here in Canada you can get a free copy when you purchase at your LSS. I adore it, and am *thrilled* that you are now part of it 🙂 Thanks for all you inspire me with Cathy!

(I think I enjoy reading some of the comments just as much as your blog! You have awesome followers.) 😉

Dalon, the site was hit pretty hard today but back up now! We are thrilled to have Cathy as a contributing writer. Kind of a dream come true 🙂

LOVE LOVE LOVE it…but so sad I have so little time this year even for Clean and Simple! How did life get so busy. 🙂

Thanks Cathy. I just downloaded it. Do you know what font is used on the cover to spell out your name – it is a script font and I love it!
Catherine Tachdjian says
Hi Brenda, the script font we use is Amelie!

I have been waiting, oh so patiently, for you to resurface in print since the demise of SS. When I saw the announcement that you would be contributing to SCT, I think my heart skipped a beat.
I too, am a Winnipegger and will happily support your presence in our fair city for an SCT Crop and Create event, should you decide to grace us with your presence.
Tamera says
So wonderful to see both you and Ali in print again! As convenient as it is on computer, you are right, there’s nothing quite like a real magazine!
