Today I have a download to share with you to help you get journaling onto cards. True, they’re designed to work with my cards, but hey, free templates, right? I know that it can be frustrating to have lined cards and get that journaling to, well, line up. It just so happens I am an expert on leading. It is, as they say, totally in my wheelhouse. (And yes, it’s holiday stuff a bit early, but everything’s on sale for 40% off at Designer Digitals. I like to promote when people can save!)
Of course, if you like my cards and like your own handwriting, please stop reading now. Get the cards (they all come in printable PDF format) and have at it! But, if you want to do a little hybrid melange, by all means, continue…
Today’s download includes three layered PSD files that contain two things: a white background and a journal block. (Note: the Merry Hipmas card shown in the package preview is not included in the free set.)
It’s all very simple. The cool part is each one is designed to work with cards from my Merry Hipmas card collection.
The idea behind this template set is that you drop in the JPEG card files, type your journaling, print and embellish as you see fit. However you dress them up is up to you.
The templates are designed using Times New Roman. Here, I changed to font to one of my favorites, Archer. Then I added a little strip of paper from Basic Grey’s new Evergreen collection pack.
DOWNLOAD THE TEMPLATE PACKAGE: CZJournalTemplates (click link to begin download)
Here’s a video showing you exactly how to combine the layered journal templates with the digital JPEG files from the Merry Hipmas collection. I also show you how to get multiple cards onto one page so you can print them out and play! Even if you have no interest in learning PSE or doing these cards, I dare you to check out the photo of me that happens just after the 50 second mark. Consider it a crap-free Easter egg. Or something.

Thank you. Love them. You at your very best. Clean and simple. I would say Seasons Greetings but if still feels way too early.
Cathy Zielske says
Thank, Delia. Yes, I usually don’t do a lot of Christmas posting before December, but there’s a big sale this week and I like my people to be able to save money on products if they are wanting to buy! 🙂
Kathleen S says
Thank you for another inspired freebie to go with your inspired Hipmass PP (already in the stash)! And I wouldn’t think of messing with the leading, really, no way. How could you think such a thing?
Cathy Zielske says
🙂
Abby P says
Thanks so much for the awesome download, Mz. CZ. Very nice of you!
Louise says
Free stuff! On a Friday!! You totally rock, Cathy. Thank you. Must confess I have no idea what leading is, but rest assured I will NOT touch it, because yes, I love lines to line up. As for Christmas-is-early . . . I passed three (yes THREE) opportunities for a free mince pie on the way into work today. Granted they’ve been on sale since September, but . . I was quite chuffed that I managed to resist, but now, on my lunch break with a healthy apple for dessert, am kinda wishing I’d nabbed just one of them . . .
Yolanda says
That easter egg photo… So very funny.
Cathy Zielske says
Thank you, Yolanda. You get me.
Tink says
Thanks girl! So glad you included a 4×4. Love that size! Will certainly make a donation (cough) at Designer Digitals this weekend.
I received my stamp from Paper Culture and it looks awesome. It was a present for his hubness who always complaints about our address stickers. It was a big surprise for him and I caught him practicing stamping for a long time 🙂 They are high quality stamps and I’m really happy with them. Thanks so much for the tip Cathy!
Cathy Zielske says
Donation (cough). You crack me up, Christine!
Jenn says
Thanks Cathy! You really are the bees knees 🙂
Jonni says
Thank you for sharing these with us.

You my friend are a true lifesaver!!! I’ve decided to do my own version of December Daily and was thinking to myself recently “Self, I need a festive 4 x 6 journal card” and here you are providing me with that very and for the FREE! Can’t beat that. . .thank you so much and even though I know I am one of the many nameless that think you are incredible, I feel like you created this one just for me (insert big smile here).
Now I can also take advantage of the Design Digital sale going on now to get some other awesome CZ templates–most of my December Daily will consist of your templates from last year and the new “Hipmas” (witty, but of course you know that) set.
Rock on CZ. . .Rock on!
Cathy Zielske says
Enjoy, Helen! And thanks for your business!
Carol says
Love you, CZ…!!
Cathy Zielske says
Aw, now I’m blushing. 😉
Jennifer says
You are my very favorite! I am doing a SN@P album for Dec Daily this year, and these journaling templates will be PERFECT for that album. And since they coordinate with Merry Hipmas, I should probably just go buy that too. Yeah. That sounds like a good idea…
Cathy Zielske says
I am either doing a brown Snap album (because I LOVE those albums, I used one last year) or a 4 x 4 Gold We R Memory Keepers. Jury hasn’t decided yet. 🙂
Donna R. says
If I purchase your Merry Hipmas collection, using the PNG format, is it possible for me to modify what is there to make it more Chanukah-ish? Would you ever consider adding a Chanukah collection? I love what you’ve done (and the freebie template), but don’t celebrate Christmas, so they are not really an option for me …
Cathy Zielske says
Donna, yes because I included PNG files. You could tweak some things, but… I am going to work on some Chanukah/Hanukkah stuff this week! : ) Also, suggestions on what you would like to see on a card are always welcome!
Heather says
Hey Cathy, quick question. Would the 3×4 one also work with the MeTAV journal cards? I was going to write them in my handwriting, but I think I want to type. And, yes that means I haven’t even started journaling. I mean I’ve written stuff, but not on the cards…I digress. Still gonna get the Christmas stuff, because I’m thinking of doing December Daily in 4×4 (instead of the 6×8 I already have planned out and put together) because 30 Days of Thankful has been so EASY and I’m actually doing it this year. And because that blue matches one of the extra 4×4 books I got perfectly. So thanks for that. 😉
Cathy Zielske says
Heather, in the digital package for the class, there are templates already set up for you! Email me if you have trouble finding them!
Carol in PA says
So, are you saying that I can change the font, and the size of the font, and as long as I don’t change the leading, I won’t screw anything up?? I know so little about this stuff, but I thought that I would have the change the leading to go along with the font size. You may have just made my scrappin’ life so much easier! I’m determined to learn how to create digital pages. Thank you for the freebies! 🙂
Cathy Zielske says
Yes! That’s what I’m saying. Watch the video and it’ll show you. Leading is dangerous stuff! 😉
Joana Costa says
Thank you so much for this. I love the cards, the text (so funny) and you! You make me smile everytime I read your blog. Have a great weekend!
Cathy Zielske says
Well thank you, Joana, for reading. 🙂

Cathy,
Do you have the RGB values for your favorite colors (the pink, orange, green, blue and gray) you use most often in many of your designs? I find sometimes entering the values is quicker than having to use the eye dropper, then paint bucket to re-use the colors in your designs. I just purchased a bunch of your check card sets today and would like to recolor them to match other products I have purchased from you. They come in black, but I have watched your videos on how to recolor your png files.
Thanks!
Cathy Zielske says
Hey Margot, email me and I can get that to you this weekend! cathy@cathyzielske.com
Lorna S says
Another simple, clean and charming set of cards! And the freebie templates – what a huge help these will be to me. I was terrible at getting my journaling on the lines – wow – you are brilliant and generous. Thank you!
Christine K. says
Thanks for the free download. I plan on visiting DD for more of your goodies.
Justene says
Thanks sooooo much for the wonderful freebies! You’re the BEST! 🙂
Holly Corbett says
Hi Cathy! Will you be doing your own version of December Daily? I will be trying this for the first time this year. I plan to use your Merry Hipmas designs and card collection and go with a very simple (and clean) look in a 6×8 album.
Cindy says
Thank you Cathy! Just getting around to watching the video. I love your sense of humour. 😉
Anne says
Thank you for the freebie templates. I bought your Cool Yule digital products last year. Today, Merry Hipmas cards are calling me:-). The Joyeux Noël card is a winner!
Cathy Zielske says
Thanks, Anne! Enjoy!
Katie says
Hi, Cathy! These are wonderful – thank you! Love your “Merry Hipmas” collection – I’m going to use the square set + these templates to print a digital “December Daily” album in an Artifact Uprising book. Not sure if you’ve mentioned this before – will you be releasing any of the “Merry Hipmas” sets as layered PSD files so photos can be dropped in digitally? Trying to figure out the best way to digitally create what you’ve shown above with the printed photos & real paper 🙂 Thanks!
Cathy Zielske says
Hey Katie, I don’t plan to do PSDs. I’ve included PNG files of all the card art so that people can recolor and add them to other files. 🙂
nancy faith says
Thanks Cathy… I am in the process of placing my order at Designer Digitals and was curious if you have other journaling templates such as these…for 4×4 or 6×6 album pages. Thanks!!!
Cathy Zielske says
I have a set called Day Documents. They come in 6 x 4. http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/16663
Abby P says
Thanks for the templates, and totally getting all 3 sets of cards — would you consider doing a 6×8 overlay set to work with a 6×9 album? I’m doing Ali’s December Daily, but I want to use your cards (hey, gotta spread the love!). Would love a 6×8 overlay that would coordinate with the cards. As always – you da’ bomb! Thanks again!
Cathy Zielske says
Hey Abby, I won’t be doing a 6 x 8 overlay type of thing. I love what Ali creates and want to support her and December Daily! But… I am release two new 6 x 8 layered template sets. One of them is designed to work with 3 x 4 and 6 x 4 cards. Mostly. I say mostly because the proportions can’t be spot on whenever you include a tiny bit of margin space, which my new set (It’s called Six by Eights No. 01) will have. Check out the shop this weekend to see them!
Abby P says
Crap — 6xEIGHT album, not 9. Sheesh.
Tracy says
Thank you. 🙂
Darlene says
Cathy, do you have a general working with digital templates video? I have an older version of PE and am not able to follow along with your video to learn how to use the free template with the Merry Hipmas files that I purchased? Many Thanks !
Darlene
Cathy Zielske says
Yes! Darlene, I have tons of videos and tutorials. Check out a very basic digital scrapbooking tutorial here:
Almost all of my videos are done using Photoshop Elements. My version just wasn’t working for this post’s tutorial!
Annette Seubert says
Thank you so much for that freebie. I already learned so much here.
I wish you a calm Christmas time and a Happy 2015
Greetings from Germany
Annette
Morwenna says
