A few weeks ago I saw a friend’s post on Facebook talking about a line of PJ pants called Punjammies. Not only were the pajama pants charming and crave-worthy, but the story behind the company really inspired me to learn more. This line of pajamas helps to empower women who were once part of the sex trade in India. I posted about them recently and Sudara reached out to me to say thank you. I asked them if they would like to share their story with my readers, as well as give away a pair of the pajamas. They said absolutely!
Here is the story about Punjammies from Sudara.org:
In 2005, Sudara founder Shannon Keith took a trip to India that opened her eyes to a tragedy occurring daily to women and girls throughout the country. Shannon listened to story after story of young girls being sold into the sex trade by their families, orphans picked up off the street by pimps, and even young mothers who entered the sex trade as the only means they had to feed their children. Many were held against their will while others were trapped by economic poverty. And, even more who managed to escape life in the brothels only to return due to social stigma and having no other means to survive.
Once Shannon returned home, she shared these stories with friends. They gathered a small team together to understand how they could advocate for these women, give them opportunities to restore their broken lives and empower them to live in freedom. The team knew that without safe, steady employment, these women stood little chance of surviving outside of the brothels. They identified a group of like-minded partners in India who were compelled to work together with women looking for a way out of the Red Light Districts. And, together, inspired by the traditional Indian Sari, they created a simple pattern that the women could use to learn how to sew and named the pants PUNJAMMIES™.
In 2006, Sudara began teaching each woman the skills needed to become seamstresses. Stitch by stitch, the women gained confidence not only in their newfound trade, but also in their newfound hope and freedom. Since then, Sudara has grown into multiple sewing and skills-training center partnerships and hundreds of women have been empowered to live in freedom. The growing partnerships have also allowed Sudara to expand their program offerings. In addition to sewing, the women in the centers have access to job training and placement services, access to education for their children, safe housing if they need to escape abuse, and health and wellness services.
Every pair of PUNJAMMIES™ is named after a woman in the centers as a way to honor her bravery and celebrate her freedom. You can read stories and see photos of these strong, amazing women HERE. And, you can see the full collection of PUNJAMMIES™ (also available in mens and kids sizing!) and statement tees and tanks at sudara.org.

And yes, I’m wearing my pair of Punjammies as I type this. I would have included my full body, but I haven’t had my blow out today.
Here’s to companies who merge commerce and caring. Yes to that on every level.
