It’s the Fall Issue Launch Day for Scrapbook & Cards Today magazine! I love this day because a) I get to share an amazing issue with my readers online for free (yes, for free!) and b) because it’s so fun to see the culmination of our team’s hard work come to fruition! Being the art director for this magazine is a pleasure. I am so grateful for being able to do a job where my skills and interests align. Bonus on all fronts!
This month, my Design Your Story column is all about telling older stories. I don’t know about you, but when I started scrapbooking in 2002, I had already lived MANY years with nary a scrapbook page in sight. There are so many stories from my life that I have not documented and if middle age is teaching me anything other than what hot flashes feel like, it’s that memory is finite. I want to save some of the early stories while I can still clearly recall the details.

This is one of the very first photos I ever took of Dan, back in my Texas years. This photo is in my living room, too. I shot it on film, developed and printed the image myself in a darkroom. I loved recalling the details of that first week. I forgot about having strep throat and wishing so badly I was not sick so I could hang out more with this cute, gentle boy from Minnesota.
I also love taking an older photo and starting with one story in mind but ending with a totally different one. That’s exactly what happened with this old shot of my now 21-year-old daughter, Aidan.

I have learned so much more about how to be a better parent over the years. Therapy has helped tremendously. Learning to see who my children are has been a gift for me, and I would hope for them as well.
You can go online right now and read my column, along with all the other columns and the coolest thing about today? We have launched a brand new website, which we are so excited to share with you! Be sure to check it out!
I’m also excited to have a free download this month along with a video tutorial to show you how to use a very simple 6 x 4 layered template to create an album of favorite photos and memories. (And yes, after the video was filmed, I fixed the type on that page. lol!)

I so love the fact that I learn always something new from you! This time it was about duplicating the layers in a different way. I never knew this way of doing that! Thanks for the great video! And for the template! You are the best.
It gave me an idea to make an album with some older photos of my parents. I don’t know their story about these photos, and I can’t ask them anymore. But I might write down the things that I see or notice in these photos and make an album with that!

Love them both – making scrapbooking great (again – lol), by taking the “crap” out of it.
